In
August 1818 a remarkable encounter took place between
two British naval officers and a band of Eskimos on
the shores of Greenland. The British officers had
only ever met one Eskimo before, the Eskimos had never
before seen a white man; indeed they asked, Where
do you come from, the sun or the moon?”
This encounter was the beginning of a captivating
chapter in naval history, the dawn of a long quest,
first for the North West Passage, later for the North
Pole and then for the South Pole. The ethos that bound
these early sledging teams together, provoking them
to achieve historical milestones against overwhelming
odds, inspired a plan to mount Polar Quest, a commemorative
military expedition to the Polar Regions in 2006/07.
Polar Quest Vol II (The Mission Plans) are the
detailed plans prepared by Sean to launch the expedition.
